75 years of Mulco

A powerful drive

What connects us, drives us move forward.

Growing together

a Europe-wide network of expertise

Some relationships last because they are well-established. Others because they are allowed to grow. Mulco has achieved both: founded in 1951 as a consortium, it is now a group comprising twelve partner companies across six European countries. Within this community, each member retains its independence whilst contributing to the strength of the network.

What connects us

The power of a well-meshed group

Our diversity thrives on open dialogue. Many of our partners have shared this journey for decades, continuing to contribute their expertise and ideas to this day. A collaboration that benefits us all

In everything we do, we are guided by a simple idea: when things mesh together, everything runs smoothly. This applies to timing belts just as much as it does to partnerships. This principle has shaped Mulco for 75 years and forms the basis for continuing to make a difference together in the future.

Mulco shaping history

75 years – from our roots to the future

From the very beginning, our network has witnessed—and actively shaped—constant change. Technological innovations, new partners, and our evolution into a European group are just as much a part of this journey as digitalisation and new forms of collaboration. We invite you to explore the key milestones in our chronicle. Discover how we have grown over the decades and the strong foundations we build upon today.

Look forward to an exciting journey through time, taking you back through the past decades!

1951 – 1980 The early years

Over the course of three decades, the working group has grown into a network of expertise, new processes and technical innovations.

The early years
  • 1 October 1951

On the initiative of Ernst Hutzenlaub, four specialists in drive technology founded the Mulco Maschinentechnische Arbeitsgemeinschaft: Wilhelm Herm. Müller GmbH & Co. KG, Hilger u. Kern GmbH, A. Reiff + Cie. and Albert Reiff KG. Later that same year, Rothermundt joined as the fifth member.

  • 1952

The “Krempel” process makes it possible to manufacture larger SYNCHROFLEX timing belt sleeves and cut them into custom widths.

  • 1953

ROTH GmbH & Co. KG becomes a member of the Mulco Group.

  • 1954

The first SYNCHROFLEX timing belts with teeth on both sides are added to the product range. Mulco welcomes Anton Klocke Antriebstechnik GmbH as a new member of the group.

  • 1955

For the first time, SYNCHROFLEX timing belts with special profiles, such as cams or drive pins on the back of the belt, are manufactured using a casting process.

  • 1961

Growing demand makes a new factory necessary: Continental relocates SYNCHROFLEX production to Dannenberg.

  • 1968

BRECO launches its patented BRECO-M and BRECO-V timing belts and becomes a member of Mulco.

  • 1975

A new, continuously manufactured timing belt is launched on the market using the patented BRECOFLEX® process.

  • 1979

The development of the Synchroflex AT10 high-performance belt set new standards in tooth load-bearing capacity and tensile strength.

  • 1980

The self-aligning BRECO® timing belt marks another technical milestone.

1981–1999 The road to the European group

With new partners from France, Austria and the UK, as well as its own brand, Mulco is expanding beyond national borders. This development culminates in the establishment of Mulco-Europe EWIV.

The road to the European group
  • 1981

The MULCO word mark is granted trade mark protection by the German Patent Office – an important step towards a unified brand identity.

  • 1983

With the AT tooth profile in the pitches AT5, AT10 and AT20, Mulco presents a technical innovation to the industry. The exhibition stand at the Hannover Messe expands to around 100 m².

  • 1989

Binder Magnetic from France joins the Mulco Group – marking the start of its European expansion.

  • 1990

Mulco gains another European partner in the form of Doll (later Doll+Corvis, now Haberkorn GmbH) from Austria.

  • 1993

Transmission Developments from the UK joins the group. At the same time, a Europe-wide marketing campaign is launched under the slogan “Mulco – the power of a well-meshed group”.

  • 1994

With the introduction of the ATP high-performance range, the joint timing belt range is expanded to include a new performance class.

  • 1996–1997

A joint master catalogue and the first website heralded new structures and the move towards digitalisation. Dinàmica Distribuciones from Spain and Aratron from Sweden expanded the European network.

  • 1998

The BRECO BAT, another self-aligning timing belt, is launched on the market. The groundwork is laid for the establishment of an independent European Mulco company.

  • 1999

A historic moment: Mulco-Europe EWIV is founded and entered in the commercial register on 6 May. The working group becomes an independent European organisation.

2000–2015 The digital revolution

The website, belt-pilot and new generations of timing belts are transforming the way Mulco operates and communicates. A traditionally structured group is evolving into a digitally connected European network of expertise.

The digital revolution
  • 2000

The website is further developed to include multiple languages. A project group drives forward work on CAD data, calculation programmes and initial e-commerce ideas.

  • 2001

The project that would later become the Mulco belt-pilot gets underway. At the same time, a new conveyor belt, the BRECO ATN, is launched on the market.

  • 2002–2004

The CONTI SYNCHROFLEX GEN III marks the launch of a new generation of high-performance timing belts.

  • 2005

The first issue of “mulco innovativ” is published; together with the upgraded Mulco belt-pilot, this strengthens both communication and digital customer service.

  • 2009

The range of products offered by Mulco’s member companies is once again significantly expanded with the introduction of the CONTI SYNCHROCHAIN high-performance timing belt, designed for drives subject to particularly high dynamic loads.

  • 2015

Development continues: the BRECOFLEXmove and CONTI SYNCHROCHAIN CARBON PU timing belts mark new milestones in drive technology.

2016–2026 Shaping the future together

Digitalisation and modern timing belt technology go hand in hand – whilst our close, partnership-based relationship with our customers remains unchanged. This is what drives Mulco on to its 75th anniversary and beyond.

Shaping the future together
  • 2016–2025

The web and social media are increasingly shaping the way we communicate. Digital design tools such as the Mulco belt-pilot make it easier to design timing belt drives around the clock. Personalised technical advice provided on site remains at the heart of the relationship between Mulco’s sales partners and their customers.

  • 1 October 2026

What began in 1951 as a mechanical engineering consortium is now a strong Europe-wide network comprising twelve partner companies across six countries. Then as now, Mulco stands for bespoke solutions in polyurethane timing belt technology – and for a reliable partnership on equal terms, both today and in the future.
